Earlier warnings in the news

The table lists all current and already announced warnings that AEMET has published for Mallorca: area, phenomenon, level, start and end in local time. If there are none, it says so explicitly. The page requests the data directly from AEMET and keeps it for at most 15 minutes. If AEMET does not respond, a notice appears instead of an old status.

Below the table are earlier warnings that were covered in a post in the weather news. For the weather over the next few days, see the forecast for Palma.

2What yellow, orange and red mean in warnings for Mallorca

AEMET describes the three levels of its Meteoalerta warning system, which applies to all of Spain, as follows:

  • Yellow: The danger is low, but vulnerable people and property, or those in exposed areas, could suffer some impacts. AEMET advises staying alert and following the latest forecast.
  • Orange: The danger is significant, and serious damage is possible. AEMET advises being prepared, taking precautions and staying informed.
  • Red: The danger is extraordinary, and very serious or catastrophic damage is possible. AEMET advises acting on the instructions of the authorities and travelling only if strictly necessary.

According to AEMET, the level describes how dangerous the phenomenon itself is. The actual risk also depends on who and what is exposed, for example during outdoor activities or in flood-prone areas.

3The five AEMET warning zones in Mallorca

AEMET divides Mallorca into five warning zones, made up of neighbouring municipalities with a similar climate. According to the AEMET list of municipalities, they are made up as follows:

  • Serra de Tramuntana: Sóller, Deià, Valldemossa, Escorca, Bunyola, Esporles and others.
  • North and north-east: Alcúdia, Pollença, Muro, Santa Margalida, Artà, Capdepera and others.
  • Inland: Inca, Binissalem, Sineu, Petra, Algaida, Montuïri and others.
  • South: Palma, Calvià, Andratx, Llucmajor, Campos, ses Salines and others.
  • East (Llevant): all five municipalities of the zone, Felanitx, Manacor, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santanyí and Son Servera.

Four of these zones also have a coastal zone for wind and waves, only inland Mallorca has none. That is why coastal warnings appear in the table as a separate row, for example for the south coast of Mallorca.

4The thresholds at which AEMET issues warnings for Mallorca

The thresholds are set out in Annex 1 of the AEMET Meteoalerta plan. For temperature, gusts and rain in 12 hours, the same values apply in all five zones of Mallorca. Only for heavy rain within one hour are the thresholds lower in the south of Mallorca, which includes Palma, than in the rest of the island.

On the coast, the wind or the wave height counts: yellow from 50 km/h (force 7) or 3 m, orange from 60 km/h (force 8) or 4 m, red from 90 km/h (force 10) or 7 m. From 1 May to 30 September a lower yellow threshold applies on the coasts of the Balearic Islands, wind from 40 km/h or waves from 2 m.

AEMET issues warnings for rissagues, oscillations in the height of the sea level, only for the coasts of the Balearic Islands. Yellow applies at 0.7 to 1 m, orange at 1 to 2 m and red at more than 2 m. AEMET grades thunderstorms by strength: yellow for strong storms, orange for very strong storms and red for very strong storms that, because of exceptional characteristics, could have a high impact.

5Severe weather season in Mallorca: late summer and autumn

On 15 August 2026 the Balearic government activated its INUNBAL flood plan at pre-alert level, which according to the government coincided with the start of the period with the highest risk of DANAs (cut-off lows), heavy rain and thunderstorms. According to the government, the time between heavy rain and the rise of the island's torrents is especially short.

The readings at the Palma Puerto station also show autumn as the wettest time. On average over the years 2011 to 2025, 56.3 mm of rain falls there in September, 63.1 mm in October and 87.3 mm in November, against 3.0 mm in July (Fuente: AEMET). Details on October and November and all months in the climate table.

6Where to find the authoritative warning for Mallorca

Wetter Mallorca is an independent site and not a warning service. What counts are the warnings on aemet.es and the announcements of the 112 emergency service of the Balearic Islands. According to AEMET, warnings are preferably issued between 7:30 and 9:00 for the current day, between 10:30 and 11:30 for the following two days, between 17:00 and 19:00 as a review, and at 23:50 as an outlook for the third day. If the forecast changes significantly, AEMET issues warnings at any other time as well.

The Balearic government has its own plan for adverse weather, METEOBAL, with four levels from IG 0 to IG 3, which its Directorate General for Emergencies activates. The 112 service of the Balearic Islands publishes guidance on thunderstorms, wind and flooding. Among other things, it says to keep away from torrents and not to cross flooded areas on foot or by car. The emergency number in Mallorca is 112.
