3The beaches of Paguera and the wind

Paguera has three sandy beaches, from west to east Platja de Palmira, Platja de Torà and Platja de la Romana. According to the German Wikipedia they shelve gently into the water and are linked by a seafront promenade. Visit Calvià, the municipality's tourism site, names Palmira as the largest of the three.

The shoreline between Palmira and La Romana runs from west-north-west to east-south-east, so the beaches face south towards the sea. Visit Calvià describes Palmira and La Romana as exposed to winds from the south-east, south and south-west. From those directions wind and waves come straight onto the sand. A northerly wind, by contrast, reaches Paguera over land and blows from the beach out to sea.

To the west, Cap Andritxol juts into the sea. On it stands the Torre de Cap Andritxol, a watchtower the Spanish Wikipedia dates to 1580, about 180 m above the sea and 2.6 km from the resort centre in a straight line.

4The sea at Paguera: swimming into autumn

The water off Paguera peaks in August, at an average of 27.0 °C. In October it is still 23.3 °C, in November 19.7 °C. After that it keeps cooling, to 16.8 °C in December and 14.4 °C in February, the lowest value of the year.

For a beach holiday that means October is still an option in Paguera, November only for the hardy. The figures come from the NOAA OISST analysis, a satellite reading of the sea surface, not a measurement at the beach. In the shallow water off the sand it can be warmer or cooler. How warm the sea is around the island is on the page about sea temperature in Mallorca.

5Paguera or Peguera: where the name comes from

Both spellings mean the same place. Peguera is the Catalan name used by the municipality of Calvià, Paguera the Castilian form. This page uses Paguera throughout.

According to the Catalan Wikipedia, the name comes from pega, the pitch made here from pine resin between the 14th and the 19th century. Before that the estate was called la Torrada. In 1343 King Pere el Cerimoniós landed on the beaches of Paguera to win back the Kingdom of Mallorca for the Crown of Aragon.

6How the Paguera climate figures are produced

AEMET does not measure in Paguera itself. The figures come from station B158X Calvià, Es Capdellà, at 50 m elevation and 1.9 km in a straight line north-east of the resort centre. The same station also supplies the figures for Santa Ponsa, 4.3 km from it, so the averages for the two resorts are identical.

The data are 15 years of daily readings, 2011 to 2025, pulled from AEMET OpenData. For temperatures in January and August, rain in August and the sea in December there are 14 complete years, for the other values named in the text 15. A rain day is any day with 1 mm or more.

For the sea this page uses NOAA OISST v2.1, a daily analysis of satellite data in boxes of 0.25 by 0.25 degrees. The box used for Paguera is centred 11.8 km north-west of the resort, at 39.625 N and 2.375 E. The comparison with the capital is on the page about weather in Palma.
