2The coves of Cala d'Or: from Cala Egos to Cala Ferrera

According to the Spanish Wikipedia Cala d'Or has coves of white sand with narrow entrances and rock walls. The Catalan Wikipedia lists them from south to north:

  • Cala Egos is the southernmost, linked by road to Porto Petro.
  • Cala Llonga is the longest and holds the harbour, so swimming there is not possible.
  • Cala Petita lies between Cala Llonga and Cala Gran and is also called Cala d'Or.
  • Cala Gran is the largest sandy cove in the resort.
  • Cala Esmeralda is the trade name of Caló dels Corrals, the last cove in the municipality of Santanyí.
  • Cala Ferrera is the first cove of Felanitx.

On the map the coves open to the south-east. Wind from that side hits the entrances head-on, while a northerly arrives over land. That is a reading of the map, not a measurement.

3Harbour, Fortí and townscape of Cala d'Or

According to the Spanish Wikipedia the Cala d'Or marina was built in 1969 in the natural inlet of Cala Llonga. It consists of Port Petit and Porto Carí and has room for about 500 boats under 20 m in length.

At the mouth of Cala Llonga stands the Fortí, a fortification of 1730, rebuilt in 1793, for a garrison of twenty men. The Catalan Wikipedia says it now houses a small museum.

The resort itself was begun in 1933 by Josep Costa Ferrer, who came from Ibiza. The name goes back to the cove of Cala d'Hort on Ibiza. The white, flat-roofed houses in Ibiza style are still required by a local bylaw, according to the Spanish Wikipedia.

6Porto Petro, Calonge and Portocolom: neighbours of Cala d'Or

Cala Egos, the southernmost cove of Cala d'Or, runs by road straight into Porto Petro, according to the Catalan Wikipedia. The same article gives 3 km on the Ma-4013 to the inland village of Calonge.

For air and rain this page uses the AEMET station B434X Portocolom, 17 m above the sea, 6.0 km north-east of Cala d'Or. The nearest coastal page with monthly averages is Sa Coma on the east coast, with Cala Millor further north.

The station has gaps, so the number of years matters here. February, May and the August temperature rest on all 15 years from 2011 to 2025, as do the October rain and the sea outside December. The August rain, used in the text only in the comparison with October, rests on 14 years. For March, June, September, November and December only 11 to 13 years of air and rain data are available, so the text does not quote those values. Days with 1 mm or more count as rain days.
