Here are the monthly means of the sea surface for three stretches of coast, calculated from data by the US agency NOAA for the years 2011 to 2025. These are long-term averages, not today's reading. ## In short The sea around Mallorca is warmest in August at 26.9 °C off the Bay of Palma, and coolest in February at 14.5 °C. From June to October it stays above 20 °C on average, and in November it drops to around 20 °C. The values are monthly means for 2011 to 2025 from NOAA OISST v2.1 for the open sea. Click a month to see the weather for that month. ## When the sea in Mallorca is warmest and coolest The water is coolest in February at 14.5 °C off the Bay of Palma. Little changes in March, when the mean is 14.7 °C. After that the sea gets warmer every month: 16.3 °C in April and 18.9 °C in May off Palma. The biggest jump comes from May to June, by 3.8 degrees to 22.7 °C. In July it is 25.7 °C, in August 26.9 °C. After August the sea cools again: 25.9 °C in September, 23.5 °C in October, 20.0 °C in November and 17.0 °C in December. In January the mean is 15.4 °C. From June to October the sea stays above 20 °C on average on all three coasts, and in November it sits right at that mark with 19.9 to 20.1 °C. Off Palma, the coolest and the warmest month are 12.4 degrees apart. ## Differences between the coasts of Mallorca The three coasts hardly differ in their monthly means. The largest gap between them is 0.4 degrees in May, and in nine of twelve months it is 0.2 degrees. From January to October the water off the Bay of Palma is slightly warmer than on the other two coasts, and in November and December the east coast is ahead by a tenth. The month decides, not the coast. The centres of the three areas lie around 22 km in a straight line from Palma, 21 km from Cala Millor, 17 km from Cala Ratjada and 21 km from Alcúdia. Cala Millor and Cala Ratjada share the same area. ## Open sea or beach: what the values mean The figures describe the surface of the open sea and are not a measurement at the beach. OISST is an analysis: it combines observations from satellites, ships, buoys and Argo floats and fills gaps by interpolation into a smoothed, complete grid. One area is a quarter of a degree wide and high, which at the latitude of Mallorca is about 28 km from north to south and 21 km from west to east. In shallow coves and right at the beach the water can be warmer or colder than in the table. These data do not say how large that difference is on a given day. The table also shows averages, so individual days and individual years can be well above or below them. ## Swimming in Mallorca in early summer and in autumn May: In May the sea averages 18.5 to 18.9 °C, depending on the coast. That makes the water clearly cooler than in October. June: In June it rises to 22.5 to 22.7 °C. Because the sea gets warmer every month from May to August, the water at the end of June is warmer on average than at the start of June. November: In November the sea drops to 19.9 to 20.1 °C, and in December to 16.9 to 17.1 °C. ## Method and source The source is the NOAA OISST v2.1 analysis (Daily Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature) by the US agency NOAA, retrieved via NOAA CoastWatch ERDDAP. It provides one daily value for each quarter-degree area, according to NOAA since September 1981. For each of the three areas, the daily values for the years 2011 to 2025 were first averaged per month and year and then averaged over all years. A month only counts if a value exists for at least 80 per cent of its days. That is not the case for December 2023, so the December mean is based on 14 years. The centres of the areas are at 39.375 N and 2.625 E off the Bay of Palma, at 39.625 N and 3.625 E off the east coast, and at 39.875 N and 3.375 E in the north-east. ## Frequently asked questions ### How warm is the sea in Mallorca in summer?
